Hosting capacity maps provide critical visibility into the distribution grid's ability to support new Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and added loads. By pinpointing available capacity and identifying where commercial DER assets can alleviate—rather than aggravate—grid constraints, these tools allow developers, utilities, and stakeholders to optimize project siting and streamline new interconnections.

IREC recently released its latest Freeing the Grid interconnection grades, which evaluate the quality of each U.S. state’s interconnection rules. These policies determine how efficiently and affordably distributed energy resources (DERs)—such as solar and energy storage systems—can connect to the electric distribution grid.
